I usually don't write articles very much because I prefer audio instead.. Today is different because I have something that has caught my attention. I have been caught by the Ordovicians and I need the J.U.M.P. (Justified Use of Miltary Power) Corp of Hive Jump to save me. As you may know I had the pleasure of having Matt Raithel on the podcast this past Sunday were we talked about co-op games and Hive Jump. You can check that out here http://www.multimediacritics.com/i-heart-videogames/i-heart-videogames-episode-6-hive-jumping-with-matt-raithel. The reason I'm writing about it today is because Graphite Lab gave backers access to the demo that they showed at PAX this past weekend and I wanted to talk a little bit about what makes it so amazing. Also, they gave us a speed run demo level as well.
First off I want to talk about the visuals, it looks really great. I love the visual style of the game and the retro feel you get from it. Also, I love the fact that they are using a bright vivid color palette. Last on the visual side I'm blown away by the awesome dynamic lighting in it that is made possible by them using Sprite Lamp. What I'm talking about when I say dynamic lighting is that when you shoot your gun, the enemies shoot, or the lava, acid on the ground glow they emit light on the ground and the walls near by. Now this is very important because I can't think of any other 2D 16bit game that I have seen do that. The next thing that I'm wanting to talk about is the game-play. I'm really enjoying is the action and platforming in the game. It runs smooth and feels solid; even in the pre-alpha. It seems pretty cool that you have different weapons to switch to that can level up. A good example of this is the flamethrower. The level 1 of it is single flame, level 2 is double flame, and level 3 is triple flame. I feel that this is game that can be very intense and fun at the same time. I really like the idea behind the backpack being your respond point. It adds a neat layer when you find out that when your playing with friends that you can throw it back and forth between players. The last thing I want to talk about is sound and music. First off the music is composed by Big Giant Circles so you know the soundtrack is going to be amazing. From the little bit I have heard I love it already. The sound effects sound very nice and have this old style sound effect feel to them that I really enjoy. Overall from what I have seen and played the game is fun and challenging. I definitely am looking forward to playing it when its finished. I guess if I had to say one sentence about it I would say this. Hive Jump has made metroidvania style game and modernize it with awesome 3D style dynamic lighting, the ability to play with friends offline and online, and combined with a play style that you can't stop playing.
